Temporary and Non-Immigrant Visas

If you wish to visit the United States for a period of time and then return, you must apply for a non-immigrant or temporary visa. The United States grants non-immigrant visas to tourists, foreign students, and investors, among others.

The Immigration and Nationality Act provides several categories of non-immigrant visas:

  • Visas for visitors for pleasure or business trips. People who want to engage in tourist activities or attend conferences/business in the United States receive these visas. Visit the State Department's visitor visa page (in English) for more information on requirements and the application process.
  • Visas for students and exchange visitors are granted to participants of certain educational and cultural exchange programs. To obtain a non-immigrant visa, submit an application at the U.S. consulate or embassy, along with the relevant documents and payment of the application fee (in English).
  • Temporary worker visas are granted to individuals with certain skills or who meet the requirements to work temporarily in the United States. To legally work temporarily in the U.S., your employer must submit a petition on your behalf to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS, acronym in English) so that you can receive a work permit.

It's important to note that immigration authorities may ask the traveler to demonstrate ties to their home country at that moment.
